By Betsy Urbance, General Counsel and Vice President of Legal Services

Brokers Were Not Entitled to Commissions on Renewal of Lease

Legal case studies this issue: Brokers were not entitled to commissions on renewal of lease; Blind plaintiff’s suit against Domino’s Pizza website allowed to proceed; Appeal of suit dismissing challenge to Chicago’s short-term rental ordinance not reviewable; Seller had no cause of action against “Zestimate” he thought was too low; California consulting firm not owed finder’s fee under contract.

Advertising Checklist

One of the top question areas for the Illinois REALTORS® Legal Hotline is advertising. How to advertise in a way that meets state and REALTOR® Code of Ethics guidelines? For example, is the ad honest and truthful? Is the complete brokerage name disclosed in a reasonable and readily apparent manner (not solely a company logo or abbreviation of the company name)?

REALTOR®-Supported Candidates Win in Highly Competitive Municipal Races

By Mike Scobey, Senior Director of Local Advocacy & Global Programs

Illinois REALTORS® provided Independent Expenditure (IE) support to 20 candidates in the 2019 Municipal Elections held April 2; 13 won their respective races. In addition, direct RPAC contributions were made to 89 candidates for elected office including village president, city clerk, city council, village trustee and township trustee. Why do we focus on local races? Illinois has so many layers of local government – the most of any other state – that when we build allies and stop bad policy affecting real estate at the local level we are better prepared to defend our issues at the state and federal levels.
