GOVERNOR RAUNER ADDRESSES JOINT SESSION WITH “STATE OF THE STATE”

On Wednesday, Governor Rauner gave his annual State of the State Address to a joint session of the General Assembly. His speech, approximately 30 minutes in length, touched on Illinois’ rich history in this bicentennial year and several key issues such as job creation, public health concerns at the Quincy Veterans Home, taxes, ethics, strengthening policies to address sexual harassment complaints, term limits and education funding. The Governor emphasized an issue of top concern to Illinois citizens- property taxes. He called attention to the property tax assessment system, a system he stated favors those who can hire representation and highlighted the impact of high property taxes. He called for legislation to ban legislators from acting as lawyers before a state or local assessment appeal board and for a bill to give the voters the ability to lower their property taxes through a simple voter referendum.

The Governor will appear again before a joint session when he presents his annual budget message to the General Assembly on February 14th.
